ABI COFFEE

OUR STORY

We have a close relationship with Ethiopia; we know the terrain and where the premium coffee beans are grown. Our coffee expert Helen Ghebrehiwet was born in the Sidamo region of Ethiopia. Sidamo has a long tradition of coffee growing so Helen became familiar with coffee from an early age.

“As a child we tasted the beans directly from the coffee bushes. That is my first, very sweet and strong memory of coffee.”

Helen then came to Finland from Ethiopia in 1997 when she got a scholarship to a horticultural school.

"I am married and a mother of two wonderful children. I always tell my eldest son: You are smart and you know languages. You can help Ethiopia and Finland find each other in many ways.”

This is exactly what Helen is now implementing herself through Abi Coffee. An entrepreneur since 2012, Helen knows that quality and reliability are key in entrepreneurship, and this is exactly what Abi Coffee is all about.

As demand for our beans grew rapidly in Finland, we decided to open our own roastery. In spring 2020, we opened the doors of our roastery in Kaarina, Finland, and since then we have managed the entire process from importing green coffee to roasting, grinding, and packaging. By removing expensive middlemen, we can offer the highest quality coffee while providing work opportunities in both Ethiopia, Finland and now also in Sweden as we now launch Abi Coffee on the Swedish market through Helen's sister Camilla who grew up in Sweden. The sisters met for the first time as adults and now Camilla together with four partners will be the agent for Abi Coffee in Sweden.

At the beginning of our story, we brought coffee beans with us from Ethiopia to Finland and the beans ended up at the best roasteries in the country. Demand started to grow rapidly and people asked where to get our coffee. Since then, we started thinking about roasting the coffee ourselves. That's how the story of Abi Coffee began. In the spring of 2020, we opened our own small roastery near in Kaarina, Finland, and today we manage the entire process from importing green coffee to roasting, grinding, and packaging the coffee, with our family business. By cutting unnecessary and expensive middlemen out of the equation, we can offer the highest quality coffee to everyone. At the same time, we can increase the work in both our home countries: Finland and Ethiopia. It is important for us to offer coffee that combines the characteristics that are important to Finns, such as quality and flavor, as well as the possibility to secure the income of farmers in the country of origin. At Abi Coffee, we are personally responsible for ensuring that all our coffee beans are always of the best quality.
